OMG. I am not much of a desert person but when I saw the elevated Yodel I had to go inside. This desert was indeed every single wonderful thing about eating yodels in the 80’s, only far more elevated and DELICIOUS. I had a wave of euphoria come over me when I took the first bite. My partner got an assortment of cookies. They really nailed it— these are classic deserts but way better than most people make them 99% of the time.
I hate leaving poor reviews on businesses, so I want to highlight how delicious, and worth every penny our cake was! However, my son endured the worst service after calling and asking to pick his cake up later in the day; the person on the phone said that the store closed at 10pm and that he could grab it anytime before then. It turns out they closed at 9pm that day and he waited outside for 20 minutes in the cold last night, because the workers that were closing the store wouldn’t open the door. They made eye contact with him, then pretended he wasn’t there. All that was necessary was walking up to the door to say “Sorry, we’re closed”, and he could have explained the situation. But they ignored him as he awkwardly continued knocking and waving. Finally, a young man came to the door despite his colleagues choice to act unaware, and my son was able to explain and receive the cake. Thank God, because he would have had to show up to the party empty-handed. The young porter who came to the door was very kind, however his superior could use some customer service training.
This is NOT a reflection of the business as a whole, and the cake was great. But the ordeal was stressful and I hope that the team can avoid doing this to another customer.
This location is larger than the original place on 8th Avenue. The blackout cake isn't too sweet.
Empire Cake: A Sweet Escape in Greenwich Village
I stopped into Empire for a peak inside (that is my story and I am sticking with it) and ended up with a chocolate chip cookie and a latte, and both hit exactly the right notes without any fuss.
The cookie was well executed: crisp edges, soft center, generous chocolate distribution. The latte was smooth and well-balanced.
Classic comfort executed well…sometimes “done right” is all you need.
What really charmed me was the atmosphere. This place feels like a 1950s malt shop collided with a kid’s sugar-fueled fever dream—colorful, nostalgic, and genuinely welcoming.
The staff was warm and attentive, and the prices were refreshingly reasonable for what you’re getting.
If you’re in the Village and need a quick coffee and something sweet, Empire Cake delivers simple pleasures, done well.
I recently ordered the Liz Lemon cake from Empire Cake for a birthday celebration, and I couldn't be more pleased. The cake was absolutely delicious, moist, flavorful, and perfectly balanced in sweetness. You can really taste the quality ingredients and care that went into making it.
From placing the order to pickup, the process was smooth and professional.
The staff was friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better.
