Disgusting behavior from the staff. The man was so rude, didn’t want to help me at all. We asked to see fabric and he complained about taking it out. He had the nerve to say not to shake my head after completely disregarding anything I asked for. Completely unprofessional!! Do not go to this place!!! Ended up spending my money at Vadim Fabrics who was very pleasant to work with!
I visited this place today and have never been treated so poorly as a customer. Prior to entering G&R I had lovely browsing visits at the neighboring shops (Vadim Fabrics & New York Lace and Fabric) and was expecting the same level of customer service at G&R. Boy was I wrong.
When I walked into the store, there was one gentleman position near the entrance (who appeared to be the manager or owner) who didn't even bother to look up or greet me as I entered - which I found quite bizarre as there was only 1 other customer in the store when I entered. His intentional snub should have been the first sign that more red flags were to come.
I came into the shop to browse for fabric for a second look reception dress. This, as you might imagine, requires looking at different fabric options to assess for quality, design and fit. I received assistance in my browsing from another employee in the store that did assist me quite pleasantly.
The drama unfolded, however, when I asked the manager (who continued to actively ignore me) for assistance in looking a piece of fabric that was in their display cabinet. He refused to show it to me, citing that the item was sold out. I expressed to him that I understood it was not available and that I did not intend to attempt to purchase it, but that I was interested in looking at it to check out the craftsmanship and quality. That's what people do in fabric stores. He was adamant about not showing me the fabric and had the audacity to state that it would be too much work for him to show it (keep in mind, the garment was super accessible, just laying on the shelf), that they were busy (there were only 2 customers in the store) and that there were about to close (the time was 5:40 and the store was scheduled to close at 6pm.) He finally relented and commissioned the other gentleman working there to show me the garment (because he, while being glued to his phone except but to berate me was too busy). Even still, he insisted that I only be given the opportunity to look at one of the two pieces of fabric in the display shelf.
He continued to speak to me condescendingly and with a disdain that was so unwarranted - which I find quite curious given the treatment I saw him give to the Asian and Italian customers who were also in the store (at different times) while I was in the shop. His treatment felt racially charged, and he made it clear that I was not welcome there. How unfortunate.
I will never go back into that store again and discourage anyone else who believes money is too hard earned to spend somewhere folks aren't treated respectfully from giving such a cantakerous person their business and hard earned dollar. Especially not with options like Vadim and New York Lace and Fabric just next door.
I had a great experience with this store. I bought fabric for my daughter's wedding, as well as for myself and my mother. I highly recommend this store to everyone. They have a wide variety of collections, and the staff is very knowledgeable.
Been shopping here since I was in college. I have seen them move from 39th in the cut ... to the chic 37th street location - this is usually my first stop when I'm looking for fabric and my meet up spot when I'm dealing with clients - great staff good prices for great quality 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾💁🏾♂️
The owners are fantastic - so kind and helpful. The customer service was excellent. And they have the most beautiful fabrics I've ever seen for very reasonable prices. The store is also clean and relatively easy to navigate. They have exquisite 3D embroidered mesh fabrics, embroidered taffetas, furs, and a smaller assortment of other fabrics. This is my new favorite fabric store in NYC.
