Was interested in trying out some of the chairs here, only to find they are appointment only. I found it to be somewhat ridiculous but put up with it since this is their only NYC showroom.
I called the number on Google. It was invalid. I found another number on Google. Also invalid. I finally found a third number on an obscure page on the Steelcase website. That one was valid, but no one picked up. Over the next few days I called multiple times and no one answered. Finally I decided to do a walk in, because surely they would not turn away a customer at their doorstep.
I showed up, not sure if they were open (since they don’t have posted hours!), only to be told by the doorman I could not even be let up without an appointment. I went to Herman miller after and was able to purchase a chair right there.
Absolutely absurd business model. Seems like this company wants you to chase after them for the privilege of giving them money.
I was a little nervous because of the low reviews and being appointment only. I was going to be in NYC for a conference and contacted them ahead of time to see if they'd have any of those dates available. Mike was very helpful and prompt with his replies.
On the day of the visit I came in at about the same time that another person had arranged as well and Mike walked us both through everything. It was a good chance to talk with the other visitor as well as we both tried out the various chairs. The visit totally changed which chair I was thinking of getting and Mike shared fabric/color options that aren't available in their online configurator.
I took some swatches home and instructions on how to order. Thought about it for a week or two and sent in my order. I received my Leap a few weeks later and have had it 4 months and I've been very pleased with it. Thanks!!!
We're in the market for some new office chairs and since we're based in NYC, I was happy to see that Steelcase has a showroom in Manhattan so that I could try chairs out in person.
What I was not happy about, was when I tried to book an appointment to see some chairs, I was given a laughably short and narrow range of possible times to come in to view chairs.
I contacted the "Steelcase WorkLife Center Showroom" initially on January 21st at 1:30 PM, asking if I could come see some chairs later that day and was told in response that if I could make it to the office before 2:30 PM, it would be workable. A bit strange that the last possible showing on a Tuesday was at 2:30 PM, but fair enough given the last minute notice.
I followed up a bit later and asked if I could do a viewing on Friday at 2:30 PM. I was sent this in response:
"Next few openings we have
Tuesday 8:45-10am (need to be done at 10am)
Friday 1/31 845am-3pm (we need to be done at 3pm)"
OK, so you're telling me Steelcase's Manhattan showroom only has 2 possible appointments available within a 7 business day window? Does this company not like money or something? Why are they making potential customers jump through this many hoops and waiting this long just to buy their products? What is the point of paying for the (presumably very expensive) Manhattan real estate if they're going to have such a limited amount of time slots available.
The fact that I had to track down some obscure email address on their website just to be able to book an appointment at this showroom in the first place is ridiculous.
You know what company doesn't make me do any of this nonsense? Herman Miller. I was able to walk into their showroom that same day and test out several office chairs in person without issue.
So guess which company I'm going with?
One of steel cases semi trucks had an accident with my vehicle. I have dash cam footage of the accident. Steel case has not responded to my claims and and has ghosted me. Terrible company to be working for or doing business with if they cannot abide by the law.
I almost didn’t go because of all the terrible reviews, but I’m very glad I did! Individual buyers need to understand that they are set up to fulfill big orders for corporations, but they are more than happy to help us - just at certain hours on certain days. I called, got the voicemail telling me to send an email, and my email was answered within an hour. I went in by appointment at 10am today. There were 2 other individual buyers there and we all got plenty of attention. We tried chairs, looked at cloth samples and were given some to take home, and the purchase and warranty process was explained (differences between buying online and from the showroom). We were told to take our time making a decision and given a paper to fax back with what we decided on. All help - zero pressure.
