Showed up at 1:50 an appointment for 2 PM on Friday and waited a whole hour for a domestic partnership. They do not accept cash. Bring proof of address.
I had a great experience at the Brooklyn courthouse obtaining my marriage certificate. The process was very easy and organized. First, you apply online for the marriage license, then schedule an in-person appointment to obtain it. After that, you schedule another appointment for the ceremony.
On the day of our ceremony, the whole process took about 30 minutes, but once we were in the room it took about 3 minutes for to be officiated, and we received our marriage certificate immediately after. I was literally in and out.
The security officers were very nice, and the entire staff was friendly, professional, and helpful. Overall, it was a smooth and wonderful experience. 💍
We were married here recently and it was just as lovely as we hoped it would be. The security was pleasant and efficient. The entire lobby/counter area was charming and organized. We were married by a kind and elegant woman named Alisa F. We even bought some little pins from the gift shop as a keepsake. It was perfect and we are so thankful.
One of my favorite places to capture weddings in the city, The Marriage Bureau is a simple and straightforward process that returns a lost feeling of how generations before would marry without all the fuss of a big wedding. I love how this building has been preserved and has maintained an art deco charm since its remodel in the 1920’s. Ceremonies here are quick (2-3 min in the actual ceremony room) and you can spend time before and after taking photos in the many different photogenic places in and around the building.

1. IMPORTANT: If seeking an extended certificate on another day (not same day as city hall wedding) they will ONLY allow the person who scheduled the appointment in the building (not both members of the couple)! You will need to fill out one form and wait for your number in the small side room. The certificate is $35 and $30 for additional copies.
--- NOTE: It is possible to try and get this certificate same day but the day we got married there was a wait so we decided to come back another day.
2. Once you have the extended certificate, you will then need to go across the street to 60 Centre Street (Supreme Court Building) and to the basement. They will stamp the certificate and it will cost $3. You can pay cash or card (some older reviews mentioned cash only but not true as of Jan 2026). This was very quick.
3. Next and last stop is the NY Department State (123 William St) which is further down the street. You will need to get a number and fill out a form. You will then hand over the certificate and they will then call you once they have validated and apostille the document. NOTE: I don't recommend popping in around noon/lunch as the wait for us was around an 1hr. Also we paid $10 per certificate via personal US check (medieval but true) based on past reviews. Unsure on other options.
